For 24 years, Norma sold for a company that provided fuel to government and private enterprise. It was delivered in a cardlock system that helped companies track and keep tabs on their fuel costs by vehicle. On the monthly invoice, the fleet manager could tell who had purchased how much fuel and from which of 27 fuel sites in the community and hundreds of fuel sites on the west coast.
Norma would tell you that you could buy fuel from any station on every corner of every major street in the country. And in many cases you might save 3 to 5 cents a gallon, maybe more at times, over buying the fuel from her sites.
For 24 years, Norma knew she really didn’t sell fuel. What her customers wanted to buy and what she sold them was control. Control over their fuel costs and the potential for employee waste and/or theft of that fuel.
What would absolute clarity of what you really sell, your vision for the company, and the ability for all employees to understand that vision look like?
Better yet, how much more successful would your company be and how many more dollars would you make with that kind of clarity?
Let’s look at the opposite side of that – how much money has your company lost because of a lack of clarity and employees who don’t understand why we are here and in business?
If you are a CEO or an owner, chances are you have a very clear vision of where you want the company to go and what you want things to look like. How valuable would it be to you, to have all your employees in agreement and carrying forward that vision with the same purpose and passion with which you operate daily?
What is absolute clarity?
This is a great question. It is different for every business and or governmental agency.
Try this experiment. At your next staff meeting hand everybody a 3X5 card. With no fore warning, give everyone 5 minutes to do this exercise. The assignment is to write a one or two sentence answer to these two questions:
- What kind of company are we?
- What do we really sell?
Chances are if you give this exercise to 5, 25 even 50 people or more within your company that is how many different answers you will receive.
Ask yourself again, what would be the value of absolute clarity and to have all of your employees on the same page? We can help you get there!
